Your Guide to Cancer Survivorship

Completing cancer treatment is a significant milestone, but survivorship is a journey that continues long after your last appointment. Every survivor's experience is unique, and it's normal to feel a mix of emotions as you adjust to life after treatment.

Some people feel relieved and ready to move forward, while others experience uncertainty, anxiety, or concerns about cancer returning. There is no "right" way to feel. Survivorship is about finding a new normal and taking steps to support your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

What Does Cancer Survivorship Mean?

Cancer survivorship begins with diagnosis and continues throughout the rest of your life. It includes everyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, whether they are actively receiving treatment, in remission, or living cancer-free after treatment.

As a survivor, you may continue to navigate follow-up appointments, manage long-term side effects, and make healthy lifestyle choices that support your overall well-being.

Adjusting to Life After Treatment

Life after cancer may look different than it did before your diagnosis. Some survivors return to their normal routines quickly, while others need more time to recover physically and emotionally.

As you adjust, it's important to:

  • Attend recommended follow-up appointments.

  • Stay active when you're able.

  • Eat a balanced diet.

  • Prioritize your mental and emotional health.

  • Reach out for support when you need it.

You Don't Have to Navigate Survivorship Alone

Many survivors find comfort in connecting with others who understand what they're experiencing. Consider:

  • Becoming a mentor for someone newly diagnosed.

  • Using trusted online resources to learn about survivorship and side effects.

  • Talking openly with your healthcare team about any concerns or changes in your health.

Your healthcare providers remain an important resource throughout survivorship and can help you create a personalized plan for ongoing care.
