Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: Signs and Symptoms to Know

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a type of cancer that begins in the immune system. It develops when lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, become abnormal and multiply. These abnormal cells can build up and form growths, often in the lymph nodes. Recognizing possible symptoms can help you know when to talk with your doctor.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of lymphoma and how quickly it grows. Some forms develop slowly and cause few symptoms, while others grow more quickly and may cause more noticeable changes.

Common signs and symptoms include:

Swollen lymph nodes: Painless swelling in the neck, underarms or groin may be an early sign of lymphoma.

Fever: Unexplained or persistent fever may occur.

Night sweats: Drenching night sweats that soak clothing or bedding can be a symptom.

Unexplained weight loss: Losing weight without changes to diet or activity may warrant medical evaluation.

Fatigue or weakness: Persistent tiredness that does not improve with rest can accompany lymphoma.

Abdominal swelling or discomfort: Lymphoma may affect organs such as the spleen or liver, which can become enlarged.

Fever, drenching night sweats and unexplained weight loss are sometimes called B symptoms and may be considered when determining the stage of lymphoma.

When Should You Talk to Your Doctor?

These symptoms can have many causes, and experiencing one or more does not necessarily mean you have lymphoma. However, it is important to speak with your doctor about persistent, unexplained or concerning symptoms.

Your doctor may begin with a physical examination to check for swollen lymph nodes or an enlarged spleen or liver. Blood and urine tests may help rule out other conditions, while imaging tests such as CT, MRI or PET scans may help identify areas of concern.

A lymph node biopsy may be recommended to examine tissue under a microscope and determine whether lymphoma is present. Additional tests may be needed depending on your symptoms and initial findings.
